Critical Wetting of a Liquid/Vapor Interface by Octane
نویسندگان
چکیده
The wetting of the planar interface between air saturated with octane vapor and an aqueous solution by octane is investigated by ellipsometry and interfacial tension measurements. The interfacial interactions are varied through the concentration of the uncharged solute (glucose). We observe abrupt and continuous increases of the octane coverage with growing solute concentration. This we attribute to shortand long-range (dispersion) interactions, respectively. The continuous thickness growth is analyzed as a critical wetting transition. [S0031-9007(98)08325-2]

High resolution non-contact AFM imaging of liquids condensed onto chemically nanopatterned surfaces.
The wetting of ethanol and octane on chemically nanopatterned surfaces has been investigated using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) under controlled environmental conditions. The patterns were generated on a methyl-terminated, organic monolayer using an AFM electro-oxidation process. The subsequent wetting of the organic liquids was studied using non-contact mode AFM under equilibrium conditions w...
متن کاملA More Accurate Prediction of Liquid Evaporation Flux
In this work, a more accurate prediction of liquid evaporation flux has been achieved. The statistical rate theory approach, which is recently introduced by Ward and Fang and exact estimation of vapor pressure in the layer adjacent to the liquid–vapor interface have been used for prediction of this flux. Firstly, the existence of an equilibrium layer adjacent to the liquid-vapor interface ...

-Photographic studies of vertical pool boiling for near-saturated conditions were conducted in order to determine the critical heat flux (CHF) trigger mechanism. The studies revealed that, for heat fluxes near CHF, vertical pool boiling exhibits vapor behavior similar to that observed in flow boiling. At fluxes slightly below CHF, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability creates a wavy layer at the liq...
متن کاملQuenching of capillary waves in composite wetting films from a binary vapor: An x-ray reflectivity study
We report x-ray reflectivity measurements of the internal structure of thin wetting films formed on a silicon substrate from the vapor of a binary mixture of methylcyclohexane ~MC! and perfluoromethylcyclohexane ~PF!. At T530 °C ~below the bulk consolute temperature of Tc'46 °C) variation in the difference in temperature between the substrate and the vapor induces changes in film thickness ~25 ...
متن کاملO ct 2 00 4 NaCl nanodroplet on NaCl ( 100 ) at the melting point
The self-wetting properties of ionic crystal surfaces are studied, using NaCl(100) as a prototype case. The anomalously large contact angle measured long ago by Mutaftschiev [1,2] is well reproduced by realistic molecular dynamics simulations. Based on these results, and on independent determinations of the liquid-vapor (γ LV) and the solid-vapor interface free energy (γ SV) [3], an estimate of...
